premier league schedule

and welcome to "the starters" live from the samsung nba summer league at the thomas and mack center in the beautiful las vegas. the diehards, the crazies are out for night too. if you guessed i would be wearing the red shirt, you are

correct. alongside me is always, test malus. tas: these are not paid actors. j.e.: to my right, trey kerby. trey: hey. j.e.: good enough. finally, the international man of mystery, leigh ellis.

on tonight's show, we've got to guests. nba tv's brent barry is going to join us. we've got a challenge in store for bones. later on, jazz rookie trey lyles is going to join us in the penalty box we set up.

it's very odd. we are going to have trey lyles battle trey kerby in a battle of wits, endurance, and skill. trey: it's an important contest for all the treys. j.e.: we will get to that a bit later. let's talk a bit about the

action from day two. i didn't want to humiliate you again. we have the clich㉠of the day that we cannot say. last night, it was potential. we got a couple brose holding up the sun. last night, tas said the way

potential -- the word potential. tas: when it comes to these empires, it is hard to not say the p-word. j.e.: the word tonight is "fit." you can say it once. tas:tas: you can say it in terms of an anatomy, or you can say he just works with the team.

j.e.: let's get to some of the action from day to hear at summer league. let's start with the lakers and sixers. low-scoring game, but jordan clarkson, providing offense. larry nance, little defense. l.a. picks up the 68-60 win over

philly in vegas. let's talk about a guy everyone has their eyes on, jahlil okafor. tas: it must be exciting for sixers fans to draft a player and see him put on a uniform. seriously, it must've felt cool, and especially for a guy who is

so confident, a guy who demands the double-team in the post. usually, you see some butterflies, but i don't think he has been. trey: he looks like he's going to be a force inside. he looked tough. he looked like he was ready to

make moves. he just looked like an nba post player playing in his first game ever. leigh: he's got the massive hands, and you can see that. that's really going to help him get the ball around the rim, finishing like that.

such great control. it looks almost like a tennis ball. that was fun to see. tas: those philly winters, if he's looking for gloves, it's going to be hard to find gloves. [laughter] leigh: seriously, he looks like

a very good -- tas: in a first game, to be able to command a double-team -- he's playing against guys who are not the same caliber as the nba, but the confidence was there. j.e.: that was the good news for the sixers today, 19-11. the bad news was that the 76ers

announce that show well embiid will have a second surgery on his right foot. this time, it's a bone graft to he's going to miss the entire 2015-2016 season. he missed all of last year due to a similar injury. this is tough news.

trey: kind of a bummer to start your first two seasons out of the league, but at least he's only 19 years old. it means he's only 21. if you're young, it helps out. the problem is those injuries are horrible to deal with if you are a big guy.

j.e.: the good news-bad news with that type of injury, the bad news, yao ming had a similar injury, and cut his career short, but zydrunas ilgauskas, he missed a big chunk of his career but battled back and played for a great decade. tas: they seem to be playing it

safe. in may and june, he was throwing down dunks and throwing it through his legs. he looked like the athletic joel embiid. j.e.: to the knicks and the spurs a little earlier from vegas summer league.

the knicks, undefeated in summer league. they beat the spurs 78-73. hammen, making history, becoming the first woman to coach a team in nba summer league action. all eyes on the knicks fourth overall pick. what did you think of him?

tas: when you got a 7'1" guy hit in floor, that is always a good sign to do not to make a lot out of 18 minutes of play, but he looks like a seven-foot guy who is athletic, blocking shots. and he's got touch. phil jackson, you can't hide from him.

our cameras are everywhere. leigh: you can see why they drafted him and the potential they saw. he moves really well. it's going to take some much time before he can really have an impact. i think his first season is

going to be a lot of growth and development. hopefully, the knicks, the concert to see the progress. i think this year is going to be another tough year. he's going to get a lot of attention defensively. defenders are going to go after

him and challenge him. tas: that'stas: why he's going to come off the bench. i think that would be the smart move. j.e.: one more game. bulls and wolves. this was a fun one. chicago fan trey kerby, just

loving what you saw from og bobby portis. a huge step line. 23 points and seven boards. the bulls open up their summer league series, picking up the 84-71 win. trey: matched up with karl-anthony towns most of his

game, and you can tell he was enjoying it going against the number one overall pick. he hit a couple threes, something i didn't know was going to be part of his skin. i would love to see bobby portis get some time. it's a weird scenario, but i

guess having too many good players is a good problem to complain about. tas: going after towns like crazy and enjoying it -- he had a bounce in his step, and he's got handle. for a 6'11" guy, he was comfortable handling the ball.

leigh:leigh: just learning from pau gasol, doing training sessions with him, that's going to be great even if he doesn't see too much court time. it could help them in a few years. definitely coming into the draft -- j.e.: definitely coming into

the draft, he was seen as a high-energy guy. on court action, pretty entertaining. off the court action, just as great. here is john malkovich talking to reggie miller about michael jordan's legendary

competitiveness. doug collins was out doing again in l.a. when i happened to be out there. we went out to dinner. he drafted jordan. he told me a great story. he said, do you think i'm competitive?

if michael jordan plays your five-year-old in ping-pong, he has to win 21-0 and bounce every ball off the middle of the kids forehead. j.e.: you see it all at summer john malkovich on the call. when we come back, a vegas addition of the bone zone.brent barry when we come back.

these buttery croissant dogsare so gourmet and so french. j.e.: back with "the starters." the vegas edition of the bone zone, joined by brent barry. there's your camera. it's so simple. bones, before we get into it, there is a clich㉠were that you have to avoid if you say it.

-- you have to avoid. if you say it, you get hit by silly string. >> can i just mentioned something? we were just doing the game downstairs, finishing up today's activity. an awesome time in vegas so far.

you guys have the quick hit and you said, "the starters" coming up, and somebody booed. i wondered if they thought john was going to be here. maybe they got it mixed up. i'm loving the trey kerby thing. one is in full plumage. j.e.: it's a great beer.

you mentioned you are calling a lot of the games. brent: that's my job. j.e.: we wanted to sort of suggest some ideas that you could try to plug into the broadcast. we want to help you out. we are going to give you the

bones color commentary challenge. brent: is this like mark jackson bingo they were doing a few years ago? j.e.: tomorrow's game, the first game you are calling is the suns and the rockets. 4:30 p.m. on nba tv.

we've got a couple challenges. here is what we are going to do. $50 for every successful challenge we give to a charity of your choice. first one, any point in the broadcast, you have to say dinkers and dumpers. brent: i can get that in no

problem. tas: are you familiar with the term? brent: i am. ok. are you going to give me the list? guys can cut it in tomorrow night.

i feel good about that one. j.e.: the second one, little more difficult -- you have to say, and a southern lawyer accent -- trey: we've got ourselves a game. usually in a close game. maybe you want to try it out?

brent: we've got ourselves a trey: you could be a partner at my law firm. [cheering] brent: all the jazz fans have been down south. j.e.: a $50 bonus if you say it when the score is 2-2. brent: what about jump ball?

is that $100? j.e.: sure. brent: aren't those the same shirts from last year? j.e.: challenge number three -- in your best australian accent, you have to say -- leigh: that's what i call a very solid play.

j.e.: what is wrong with you tonight? what is wrong with you? leigh: i'm tired, i admit. night, that was a very solid play. j.e.: don't forget the two thumbs. all right.

challenge number four -- you might remember this -- we opened up a pack of basketball cards. you have to mention mavericks great mike is a leno. brent: he had a map skin tomorrow? tas: yeah. j.e.: you've got to do it during

the suns-rockets game. brent: i've got to do all of these in one game? do i have to say it with an australian accent? leigh: no. j.e.: the final one, a classic -- you have to meow on the air. you have to give us a great

meow. brent: like a struggling cap. j.e.: where you could say meow ming instead of yao ming. leigh: $300 to charity. j.e.: before we let you go, we do want to get your quick take on this deandre jordan fiasco. yesterday, dj apologized on

twitter to the mavs and cuban. cuban responded that he wasn't buying it and wasn't done. check it out during the mavericks summer league game. >> let's talk about the deandre jordan situation. you guys have moved on. >> i have no idea who you are

talking about. >> seriously, it's behind you, and you have moved on? >> i'm trying to figure out who you are talking about. j.e.: there you go. brent: can we say this? you guys might not all agree with me, but you should.

if there is any owner in this league with this kind of soap opera that he would want to have talked to the media, be with the media, deal with the media, mark cuban is the guy. this guy is phenomenal. he's obviously having a little bit of fun with this.

there's no doubt his feelings are hurt. it's an unfortunate test test it took him a while to come around to end up back in l.a., but it provided tons of drama and twitter ammunition to enjoy the whole ride.

it's one of the highlights of the summer so far, not for maverick fans, but certainly for nba fans to follow what happens. >> how could maybe jordan have handled it a little differently or you think it's completely fine? >> i don't think it's completely

fine. >> phone call? >> i think that certainly wads was in order, not on social media. that might appease a lot of people nowadays, but certainly pis picking up the phone, that would

have been a gentlemanly way to handle that. but obviously, deandre jordan doesn't fit -- >> oh, no! >> he wants it! he wants it! >> he wanted it. >> bones, we couldn't give you a

real cake, so here's some cake mix. we saved the cake for our real guest. >> i would like to take that home to canada. we don't have that there. >> let's give it up for brent barry, everyone.

when we return, it's trey versus trey. come on back. you're watching "the starters." >> back with "the starters," live from samsung nba summer league. joined by jazz rookie trey lyles.

trey, thanks for joining us. really appreciate you staying around and coming on the show. trey, last year, trey burke, at summer league we had him on the show. we thought, you can never have two treys at the same time or if you do, they have to battle each

other. trey burke took on trey kerby. there was a staring contest, a trivia contest and a staring cup game. so it only makes sense that you try and avenge your jazz teammate, trey burke, who got, quite frankly, killed by trey

kerby. let's see the tale of the tape, if we have it, before we get the props out. the tale of the tape, two big guys here, lyles at 6'10", 250. trey kerby, a very unhealthy 6'5", 225. both guys living in canada.

yes, they both have lived in canada. first one, battle of wits. i got questions for you guys. first one, how many kentucky players were selected in the 2015 nba draft? do not show him, okay? kerby didn't know.

they're both showing six. that's correct. this one is going to be a little tougher. how old is utah jazz coach quin snyder? >> i don't know. >> show those answers. >> 32.

>> 32? he does look good. quin snyder, 48. >> 48? >> the flowing hair. >> what is he doing? >> he's a good 48. [ laughter ] >> all right.

final one here, what is the population of saskatoon, saskatchewan? best guess. >> how big of a city would you say it is on the ranking small to big? >> kerby has no idea. >> saskatoon obviously being the

hometown of trey lyles. >> you guys are way off. 222,000, according to a 2011 census. >> that could be out of date by now. >> that's true. a lot of people left saskatoon. we're done with these.

as you saw versus burke, a straight-up staring contest. it's a little weird. he's already rattled. >> he's tired from your game coming up here. >> he's a little exhausted. kerby has done nothing today. here we go.

let's start the staring contest wow, it's intense. this is good. >> it's a squint. that's not a blink. >> oh! that's a win for lyles! final thing here. help me out here.

>> that's two wins, isn't it? >> this is for a billion points, though. you don't know how this game works. we're giving you this. you might want to stand up for this. grab those.

it's the classic cup game. >> this is my specialty, undefeated against nba players, 2-0. >> we start with 39 red cups here and one blue cup. you're going to move this blue cup up by removing one cup from the top at a time and putting it

on the bottom. whoever gets that blue one to the top first -- >> you switch hands. >> and you have to alternate hands. makes sense, right? >> here's the thing, kerby has done this before.

we're giving him three extra cups. >> trey cups. >> here we go. when you guys are ready, begin. one cup at a time. switching hands is smart. let's go, which trey. lyles is doing all right.

>> lyles is flowing. >> come on, you got it, you got it. >> whoa! >> we got ourselves a battle. >> oh, it's close. >> it's close, it's close. >> it's close. ♪

>> i think we gave them too many we gave them too many cups, it's confirmed. it's taking too long. >> it's tight, it's tight. >> let's go, lyles. what's going on? >> start cheating, lyles. start cheating.

>> it's over! it's over! [ applause ] >> it was controversial, but it was fun. trey lyles, everyone. give it up for trey lyles. they all cheated. >> we got word that trey kerby

grabbed two cups. the winner, by default, obviously, trey lyles. >> trey, your prize, a cake. as always, we give every guest a cake, except brent barry, we give him cake mix. >> of course, it says, cakers going to cake.

cakers going to cake, haters going to hate. we'll be back. wrap it up with leigh's very solid play. >> back with "the starters." time for leigh's very solid play of the day. >> lakers-sixers, d'angelo

russell with a beautiful bounce pass. one way to get noticed on this show, look at that. also what i like, that's what i call a very solid play. >> don't dunk if if you want to get the very solid play. lay it up.

let's take a look at the samsung summer league upcoming schedule. sunday, july 12th, there's a whole lot of basketball, eight games on the docket. you see the four games there on nba tv. keep your eye on the suns and rockets.

bones on the call, can he get all five challenges in? we'll find out tomorrow and be back tomorrow night to talk about it. >> thanks for joining us, folks, and remember -- what happens in vegas can be quite entertaining. let's go have fun.

embrace the night, people.
